Nicole's Profile

I am Nicole, a four-time survivor of Leukemia. I was first diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) on October 26, 2010.  I participated in a two and one-half year clinical trial at Stanford University Medical Center.  The treatment regimen was extremely aggressive to say the least.  After three months of hospitalization and daily treatments (8-12 hours/day, 7 days/week) lasting over six months, I suffered from nearly every side-effect from chemotherapy.  In spite of all the complications and years of intense treatment, I achieved complete remission in 2012. I have had two bi-lateral knee surgeries (2013 & 2014) to repair Avascular Necrosis (bone death) in both knees - a major, debilitating side effect of steroids given during treatment. In April 2014 my leukemia came back. I was treated, once again, at Stanford University. I achieved remission in October but still had treatment going into 2015. In April 2015 I relapsed again. This time, I had Isolated leukemia in both eyes and active leukemia in the central nervous system (CNS). After surgery, radiation, and chemo, I relapsed for a fourth time in August 2015. As of January 2016, I am currently in remission, but have a 99% chance of the leukemia returning for a fifth round. While I wait for relapse number five, I try to stay as active as possible when feeling well. I am a tax accountant; however, the majority of my time is spent volunteering.
